Calculating solar collector performance

The performance of solar collectors is usually given according to the following relationship:

η = η0 – a1 ΔT/ G – a2 (ΔT)²/G

η: indicates the efficiency of the solar collector

η0: optical efficiency of the solar collector

a1: the first-order heat loss coefficient

a2: the quadratic heat loss coefficient

ΔT: temperature difference ΔT = (tcollector – air)

G: total solar radiation reaching the surface of the solar collector

It is clear from the above that the performance of solar collectors cannot be described entirely by a single number. The best way to do this is to examine the efficiency curve for solar collectors.

The efficiency formula outlined above is the equation of a quadratic curve, the mathematical format of which is: y = b0 + b1 *x + b2 *x²

b0 = η0

b1= -a1

b2 = -a2 *G

x = ΔT/G

The efficiency curve is usually plotted as a function of the independent variable x = ΔT/ G {°Cm²/W}, according to the formula below:

η = η0 – a1*x – a2*G*x2
